Carnivore Diet success stories – with Mihaela

Interview with Mihaela

1) Introduce Yourself.

Hi! I am Mihaela Telecan. I was born and raised in Romania, in the land of Dracula, and  moved to the US when I was 28 years young. Currently, I live in Florida, with my son and husband.

I love all things outdoors and breaking a sweat in the endless Florida summer is the greatest gift I can give myself each day. All my life I was obsessed by achieving optimal health and performance. I always searched for the best ways to eat and live in order to prevent disease, stop premature aging and to maximize human performance. I love art, music and dance. What I value the most, are time and health. Having time to play with my loved ones is the ultimate reward. I treasure having health and energy so that I can play.

This is the WHY behind my choices.

I live by this quote: “HEALTH IS THE CURRENCY OF LIFE” ~ Mihaela Telecan

Therefore, I inspire those that have similar beliefs to do the same. Achieve optimal health and aspire for more, … energy, beauty, strength, wealth, in order to thrive and elevate to unsurpassed levels of BEingness.

As far as my professional path goes, I am a veterinarian doctor, registered dietitian, and coach. I am the author of MAKE PEACE WITH FAT, the creator of the C.U.R.E. method, and the founder of Healing With Foods, a wellness practice focused on helping women reclaim their right to “self-care”, so they can heal and live abundant lives.

I have been on my healing journey for the past 28 years and I have to say, every step I took on this journey, was well worth it.

2) How did you eat before Carnivore?

Before I started the carnivore phase of my healing with food journey, for about 6 years, from November 2012 to November 2020, I was eating a whole foods, low carb/ketogenic diet. Lots of cooked vegetables, nuts, seeds, minimal fruit intake, moderate to low animal protein and liberal amount of fats. I should emphasize the whole foods aspect of my keto diet.

What is more interesting, though, is that prior to that, for 10 years, I was eating a high carb vegan and vegetarian diet, which, sadly, wrecked my health; from gut health to hormonal and metabolic, I manage to damage myself pretty well, all in my attempt to actually heal my gut issues, which started as constipation in my early 20s. I should say, that’s when I became aware of it, and I was diagnosed with megacolon.

3) Why did you try Carnivore to begin with?

As I mentioned before, I suffered from chronic constipation my entire adult life. When I was 20 years old, I was diagnosed with megacolon, meaning I have an enlarged, or oversized intestine.

In my attempt to overcome the constipation, and other gastro-intestinal problems, like indigestion, SIBO, leaky gut, I tried all possible diets, from raw vegan, to GAPS and keto.

I have to say, when I came across the carnivore diet, I thought it was crazy. Eating only  meat/animal based foods sounded not only extreme, but plain crazy. However, I have an open mind, and I was willing to try/experiment with just about anything that could positively impact gut health and potentially help me resolve my life long chronic constipation. Therefore, I was willing to look into it, and to learn more about it. After a few months of research, reading about it, and listening to real people’s “success stories”, I decided to give it a go. Needless to say, to my biggest and pleasant surprise, for the first time in my life, my bowels started to work, without any aides. When I say aides, I mean teas and supplements, such as Smooth Move tea, magnesium citrate and/or a high dose of Vitamin C. Removing all plants, all fiber from my diet was the secret to optimizing my gut function, and overcoming chronic constipation. I finally found full resolution, 100% recovery, after 27 years of dietary “interventions”!

4) How do you personally approach the Carnivore Diet?

Good question. Unlike the way I approached the vegan diet in the past, (aka dogmatic), eating carnivore has become a very intuitive, body-guided, way of eating. I listen and actually respond to my body’s feedback. I recognize that I feel and perform my best when I don’t eat plants at all. My educated mind no longer feels scared by the thought that not eating vegetables and fruits is detrimental to health. On the contrary, my mind and my body are now in alignment, in full resonance with each other. With that being said, occasionally I do consume some fruits, nuts and vegetables. Now, after about one and a half years of eating 90-100% carnivore, I learned what plants I can enjoy in what amount and with what frequency. If I would say that I don’t love the taste of brussels sprouts, walnuts or berries, I would be lying. I still love vegetables and fruits, but I hate the way they make me feel, therefore, it has become easy and natural to choose the foods that I enjoy eating, and I don’t suffer any ill effects afterwards.

5) What benefits have you seen since starting the Carnivore Diet?

The first and most striking benefit was having bowel movements on my own, getting rid of a bloated stomach, uncomfortable painful gas, burping, indigestion and a bloated look and feeling. Healthy gut and digestion!

An idiopathic skin condition, known as dyshidrosis, which I have had since my 20s, that would flare up around intense periods of stress, such as exams in school, or other life stressors, goes away when I eliminate dairy and eat strict carnivore.

Aside from the above, there is a general youthful look and feeling. My hair seems to fall out less, I have incredible energy (but energy I already had since the low carb/keto year) and the skin on my thighs looks good (aka, no cellulite, ladies). I do not have perimenopausal sympotms, ( you know the usual irritability, mood swings, hot flashes, trouble sleeping, breast tenderness, loss of sex drive), or mid-life weight gain.

6) What negatives have you found with the Carnivore Diet?

None!

In fact, once the mind is willing to accept that eating this way is not dangerous, and one allows themselves to experiment with it, the body starts to repair itself, and the individual begins to thrive. That is when we realize how simple eating is, as it becomes just like breathing. Very simple, very intuitive. Nothing to count, weigh, measure, or track. Not to mention, that it is so easy when it comes to shopping and cooking, too.

It is liberating!

7) Do you exercise on the Carnivore Diet, if so, how do you find it and what do you do?

Yes, I exercise daily-ish. I continue to do all the things I always did, including run, bike, rebound, weight training, aerial obstacle courses and calisthenics. I have incredible endurance and strength. I am lean, fit and strong. I always joke with my friends, when they act shocked about my carnivore eating style, and how I look and perform.

I ask them, “have you ever seen a land carnivore that’s not lean, fit, fast and strong (think panter, jaguar, lion, tiger, etc.)”? They look at me perplexed,…

8) What piece of advice would you give someone who is interested in trying this diet, but hasn’t taken the leap yet?

First, I invite you to answer the question: “why”? Knowing why you want to eat carnivore is the first step in your successful experimentation with it. CONNECT to your WHY! Your why will be your driving force when it gets tough, because it will get tough before it will get easy and fun.

Secondly, be willing to UNLEARN. Be willing to erase everything you think you know about food and nutrition. Embark on the carnivore journey, and allow your body to give you the answers to whether this is a good fit for you or not. Our mind is a powerful thing. Fear is real. Unlearn and go with a beginner’s mind. Like a newborn. Eat to fuel and nourish. That’s what newborn babies do.

Thirdly, go in 100% and give it enough time before you cast your vote. 99% is hard, 100% is easy. Fully commit to your own success and fully connect to your why and your body.

Last but not least, you will need to REDEFINE food, if you want to find what works for you. Start to look at food as FUEL and NOURISHMENT, and less as pleasure, reward, social bounding, etc. Redefine food, using your body’s feedback. This process will take time, perseverance, and lots of self-awareness.

9) Do you think Carnivore will ever be accepted as a mainstream diet?

NO! I do not believe it will be embraced as a 21st century human appropriate diet.

Unfortunately, we are disconnected from our biological design, and from our innate wisdom. We look outside of us, to find out what to eat, when and how much. We are conditioned by the media, food advertisement, and the food industry, to eat in a way that is so unnatural. We can’t even recognize that anymore. Convenience and a modern lifestyle, pulls us away from our inner guidance and disconnects us further from our bodies, our natural way of living, from each other and from our environment.

Think about this, no animal in the wild needs nutritionists, guidelines or apps, to verify if they eat “correctly”.  We are the only animal species on earth that do that. I am afraid we are too far gone in the wrong direction to go back to eating by biological design. This is the price we pay for human domestication. I really hope I am wrong about this, but this is what I see all around me.

10) Anything you would like to add, and where people can follow you?

When it comes to taking care of our physical body, healing with food, and ultimately thriving, we have all the answers within our body. We need to CONNECT to our inner wisdom, and to allow our body to guide us. The willingness to UNLEARN and REDEFINE food, and normal, are also crucial elements on this journey. The result is an ELEVATION of our mind-body health and ultimately we get to live our full human life potential, we find our C.U.R.E.
