Interview with Martyna
Hi, my name is Martyna and I currently live in a small village in Norfolk, England, with my partner, dog, 2 cats and a ferret. I was born and raised in a small town in Eastern Europe, but I emigrated to the UK many years ago and I consider it to be my home. I’m almost 36 years old, I love to travel and eat meat.
How did you eat before Carnivore.
A lot of junk food, but also a lot of fruit and veg (which, you are told all your life, is good for you). In my mind I was balancing all the unhealthy stuff with ‘good food’. Gosh, was I wrong!
Why did you try Carnivore to begin with.
I never had issues with weight. I was, what you would consider ‘normal’ or ‘average’, until about 4.5 years ago, when I moved from the Midlands to Norfolk, and changed my job from a very active to a sedentary one. I had about 2 months break between finishing my old job and starting my new job, and out of boredom, I guess, I ate the whole time. I got into such a habit of eating badly (and a lot). It stuck with me, and I quickly gained about 100lbs (45-50 kg). Before I knew it I was about 222lbs (100kg) which, at my height (5.3 ft or 160 cm), was not a pretty sight. I tried a vegan diet, as you do, only to gain more weight and be utterly miserable and sick for the duration.
After I went back to a ‘normal’ diet I just gave up and thought to myself ‘well maybe I’m not meant to be “normal” size’. I gained a bit more weight, and was too uncomfortable to even leave the house or be in a public place. I went work-home-eat-sleep repeat for few more years. I took a break one summer for a calorie controlled diet, which I obviously failed after few weeks, as I was constantly feeling hungry and deprived.
Finally, in the spring of 2019, I decided (at 242lbs – 110kg) that I had to try SOMETHING. I found keto. I did keto for about 7 months and, as if by magic, I lost about 100lbs (about 45kg). Went down from size 18-20 (UK) to size 10(UK).
Although I loved keto, and it was very effective, it was also a bit too complicated; with counting, logging, and cooking elaborate meals just to be satisfied. It was almost like I was replacing one obsession (junk food) with another (keto junk food). I wanted to simplify my meals, my diet, and my shopping and lose the last few pounds I had left. I was already following some amazing carnivores via social media, and decided to give it a go. I had nothing to lose, I was already in a good place with my weight, energy, etc so in December 2019 I decided to try it, and I never looked back.
How do you personally approach the Carnivore Diet.
My personal favourite is sirloin steak but I like variety, I eat fish, prawns (seafood in general), burger patties, sausages, pork, chicken, eggs, small amounts of cheese, and dairy products when I feel like it. Occasionally I eat cold meat like Serrano ham. I use cream or milk in my coffee, and sweetener in coffee or tea. I also don’t mind sugar free soda or squash. I eat 90% chocolate if I feel like it, etc. I’m not a zero carber for sure, but 97% of my diet is meat.
I don’t fast and never have fasted, I’m not made for that. I eat when I’m hungry, I stop when I’m full.
What benefits have you seen since starting the Carnivore Diet.
I lost an additional 11lbs (5-6kg), I sleep better. I’ve definitely lost some inches too, but I never measured it so I can only go by how my clothes fit and how I feel. I’m definitely more confident in general. I never used to own a swimming suit, now I have 4. I’m much happier as a person and my mood is very stable. I also experienced some hair loss on keto but carnivore solved that issue completely.
A massive benefit for me is how little time I spend meal planning, shopping, prepping and cooking.
What negatives have you found with the Carnivore Diet.
I can’t think of any.
Do you exercise on the Carnivore Diet, if so how do you find it and what do you do.
Yes, but I do my own thing when I feel like it, I have no schedule etc. I walk, ride a bike, and swim (leisurely, I’m not training for the Olympics).
Before I lost the weight it wouldn’t cross my mind to exercise, because I had no energy and could hardly do simple domestic tasks without being exhausted.
What piece of advice would you give someone who is interested in trying this diet, but hasn’t taken the leap yet.
Just go for it! Take it one day at a time. Just think where you can be in 6/12 months?!
I’m the laziest person ever, and I’ve done it. I lost over 110lbs (50 kg) and I’m currently 11lbs (5kg) away from my goal weight, but most importantly I’m in a healthy weight range and I feel great. This time last year I was morbidly obese and miserable! If I can do it, you can do it.
Do you think Carnivore will ever be accepted as a mainstream diet.
Probably not for a while, but I hope so.
