1) Introduce Yourself.

My name is Daniel Munro. I’m a Canadian musician who has been struggling with atopic dermatitis and topical steroid withdrawal for the last 5 years.

2) How did you eat before Carnivore.

I ate mostly processed junk food and fast food. If I was making food for myself it was usually stuff like pasta, stir fry (usually a variety of vegetables like peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, with chicken breast and a teriyaki sauce), fruit smoothies, toast with eggs. I was also a very frequent drinker.

3) Why did you try Carnivore to begin with.

I had tried everything else. After my health went downhill my wife Kelsey and I tried a lot of different diets to address the problem. We started by trying a vegetarian diet, then we went paleo, then keto, then back to paleo. I even had an IgE/IgG blood allergy test done and cut out any offending foods from my diet for over a year. Finally after trying everything else I tried carnivore and started seeing results by the end of my first month.

4) How do you personally approach the Carnivore Diet.

We try to do nose to tail. We incorporate organ meats and have broth as often as possible (nearly daily). I tend to start the day with a bone broth then don’t eat anything until around 10AM where I eat a can of sardines. Then at lunch I have 10 oz. of ground beef. When I get home I will have whatever kind of meat is available: steak, chicken wings, bacon, pork butt being some of our favourites.

5) What benefits have you seen since starting the Carnivore Diet.

The biggest benefit has been my skin clearing up. I had cracks (more like cuts) on my neck, wrists, fingers and knuckles. Oozing on my face, hands, and feet. This kept me from being able to work for 4 years and kept me mostly bed ridden. My sleep schedule was a mess, I couldn’t sleep at all at night and would lie awake at night unable to sleep even though I was exhausted (wired but tired), also accompanied by intermittent itch fits throughout the night. I now sleep relatively soundly at night. An unlikely benefit has also been a huge decrease in my depression, which is something I have lived with all my life. It decreased so gradually that I barely even noticed, but as I started seeing results in my physical appearance my mental state also started to improve. Overall I feel calmer and less stressed while eating this way. I do believe that my gut health was destroyed by eating too many processed carbs before, while also eating way too much. I think this stressed my digestive system and ended up causing a lot of stress for me.

6) What negatives have you found with the Carnivore Diet.

It’s hard to eat anything that I haven’t prepared myself. Eating at conventional restaurants is basically impossible since they all tend to use seed oils or my food gets cross contaminated with something that I react to. I have also had a hard time gaining much weight while on this diet. That could be due my gut dysbiosis.

7) Do you exercise on the Carnivore Diet, if so how do you find it and what do you do.

My job is rather physical (shipping/receiving) so I lift a lot of heavy boxes all day and am walking around a lot. I do a lot of yoga and try to get some body-weight and kettle bell workouts in when I can as well.

8) What piece of advice would you give someone who is interested in trying this diet, but hasn’t taken the leap yet.

Eat nose to tail. Organ meat is necessary to get the full array of nutrients that you won’t be getting from vegetables in a more bio-available form. Bone marrow is also awesome.

9) Do you think Carnivore will ever be accepted as a mainstream diet.

I’m back and forth on this. I see a big push right now for people to not eat meat. However, when you look at the health benefits people are experiencing it’s becoming harder and harder to ignore. When you really start to dig into the evidence it becomes more and more logical: you can get almost all the necessary vitamins, nutrients and amino acids necessary to thrive from meat, in a more bio-available form. Our digestive systems has evolved to eat meat; we have one stomach and a short colon, we simply lack the digestive enzymes needed to properly digest plant material. We developed tools initially to extract bone marrow from animal bones and ate animal products for a lot longer than we have been eating fruits and vegetables in the quantities we do today, let alone the amount of processed food we have been introduced to over the past few decades. I think there’s good reason to think that a lot of us aren’t adapted to today’s modern high carbohydrate diet.

10) Anything you would like to add, and where can people follow your journey.

I think finding a community online can really help with this diet. No one I know in real life follows this diet; some of them would even think that it’s crazy to even do. Finding support online can provide you with useful tips on how to maximise your results as well as help you from feeling like you’re some meat crazed weirdo.
