Interview with Jen

1) Introduce Yourself.
My name is Jen, and I am a carboholic.
2) How did you eat before Carnivore.
I have been on diets for as long as I can remember. I tried the cabbage soup diet, mayo clinic diet, Weight Watchers, low calorie, atkins, and keto. I did lose quite a bit of weight on the Atkins and Keto diets, but I would always gravitate to the acceptable desserts, or faux breads. When I wasn’t on one of these plans I ate whatever I wanted including sugary coffee’s from Starbucks, pizza for dinner, fast food for lunch, etc.
3) Why did you try Carnivore to begin with.
I was looking up more keto type recipes online and stumbled on an article about Kelly Hogan eating only meat. I was intrigued and started digging. This led me to plenty of stories and people like Dr. Shawn Baker doing this crazy thing of only eating meat. I know I have a sugar addiction and it made sense to cut out even acceptable sweets if I wanted to get rid of the sweet tooth. Another reason is that when doing keto there are a ton of different things for recipes and I wanted simple. Just cooking meat seemed like a great idea. No crazy spices, powders, and gadgets. I had tried everything else to lose weight, why not try this?
4) How do you personally approach the Carnivore Diet.
I have found that meat, eggs, salt, black coffee, and water work best for me. I am not going to lie though. I love cream in my coffee and snacking on cheese. But, when I have dairy my weight loss stalls and I feel bloated.
5) What benefits have you seen since starting the Carnivore Diet.
I have been losing weight. In fact as of this morning I have lost 70lb since last October. I still have a ways to go but this is amazing. I used to have knee pain, but that’s gone. I can take stairs now without being in agony. I sleep much better and don’t need as much of it. It’s kind of annoying because I generally wake up before my alarm now. I no longer crave sugar and can easily pass it up. In fact, I just went to my niece’s wedding and everyone was offering me cake and cookies to celebrate and I wasn’t even interested in it. That’s a huge victory for me, especially since it was my favorite type of cake. I have also learned what true hunger is and how to listen to my body.
6) What negatives have you found with the Carnivore Diet.
I don’t really have any negatives. I do have to look at online menu’s before going out with friends and family to dinner. Most of them are supportive and know to pick places where I have at least one meat option. Some people aren’t as supportive and try to get me to eat just a bite of something or tell me it can’t be healthy, but those people are usually unhealthy themselves. I have learned to tune it out.
7) Do you exercise on the Carnivore Diet, if so how do you find it and what do you do.
I don’t have a daily exercise routine. I do try and get steps in at work and when it’s nice out go for walks. I also have a kettle bell that I use occasionally, but not consistently.
8) What piece of advice would you give someone who is interested in trying this diet, but hasn’t taken the leap yet.
I would guess that people looking into this way of eating are either looking to lose weight like me, or have some health issues that are hindering them. I would say take the leap and try it. We have all tried tons of different things to help us and this might just be the one that actually works. When you do, try to do it wholeheartedly, and for a good period of time before giving up. Your mindset will change and you will learn to actually listen to your body.
9) Do you think Carnivore will ever be accepted as a mainstream diet.
Sadly, no. I think the pharmaceutical companies and major food brands like Kellogg’s will always be quick to scare tactics and other means to keep it from going mainstream. They would lose a lot of money if it did. Also, most physicians including my own only go by what they are taught and are unwilling to even consider it. I challenged my own doctor to at least read up on it and he won’t. They will keep prescribing pills instead of nutrition.
