Welcome back to Day 14 of my Edinburgh Marathon MAF Training series! Today’s episode takes us on a weekend long run unlike any other – a 17-mile loop through picturesque landscapes, running along old railway lines that whisper tales of history with every step.
π² In this run, I embark on a journey from my town, immersing myself in the tranquility of nature and the rhythmic sound of my footsteps. But it’s not just about the miles; today, we delve deep into understanding “Cardio Drift” and how it influences our training.
π What is Cardio Drift?
Cardio Drift, or Cardiac Drift, is a phenomenon where your heart rate gradually increases during a long run, even when your pace remains consistent. This can be a challenge in MAF (Maximum Aerobic Function) training, where maintaining a specific heart rate is crucial.
π‘ Combating Cardio Drift
The key to managing cardio drift lies in anticipation and mindset. The best strategy? Choose a route where walking is just as enjoyable as running. Today’s trail is a perfect example – scenic and serene, making those walking breaks an integral part of the adventure rather than a setback.
β¨ Tips for MAF Runners:
- Monitor Your Heart Rate: Keep a close eye on your heart rate to recognize when cardio drift begins.
- Embrace the Walk: When your heart rate dictates, slow down to a walk. Enjoy these moments as part of your endurance journey.
- Enjoy the Scenery: Choose routes that are visually appealing and where walking becomes a part of the exploration.
π₯ In today’s video, you’ll see how I navigate these challenges and use the beauty of my surroundings to my advantage. We’ll discuss more on primal endurance running, the importance of listening to your body, and how to use these insights to improve your marathon training.
