Interview with Katja

1) Introduce Yourself

My name is Katja, I am 39 years old,  originally from Germany but live in the UK. I started the carnivore diet in December 2018.

2) How did you eat before Carnivore?

I ate ‘well’, as much fresh and organic vegetable as possible I even trained as a gardener at some point because I liked my allotment so much.

4 years ago I had a headache that lasted three months (!) no doctor could help me and eventually I fixed it by cutting out gluten.

That was the first time I saw how food can make a difference. But I stayed fairly naive and just started baking my own sourdough loaves, which I could tolerate.

I had meat and eggs as well, but I would have chicken rather than beef. When my anxiety and panic attacks where at there most severe I was eating a lot of kale and sweet potato.

3) Why did you try Carnivore to begin with?

I lived with bipolar depression and anxiety starting at 12 years old. My symptoms got classed as severe and I kept developing additional degradation of my brain and body. I started getting ADHD as a young adult, developed Aspergers, my doctors thought I gone mad and did nothing to even get me a proper diagnosis.

When arthritis started to set in my hands (I am a practical person and an artist) I couldn’t take anymore. That anger I felt then and having more terms to google got me to the carnivore diet. I changed my food from one day to the other I had nothing to lose.

I was lucky to meet a real-life carni in a new colleague and when I saw how healthy and fit the community looked I had no worries to jump right in.

4) How do you personally approach the Carnivore Diet?

My baseline is beef. I like rib-eye steaks, brisket and short ribs best. I add eggs, seafood, butter and organs. I drink water, coffee and whiskey.

5) What benefits have you seen since starting the Carnivore Diet?

I had a hard time during the adaptation phase my mood and energy were struggling. My cognitive function improved significantly after the first six weeks and I live symptom-free and without any meds. I am learning to trust myself and enjoying life like never before. Every day is a gift. I am humbled by having a proper life now.

If I ever get symptoms I know that I did or eat something that harms me and I adjust.

I stopped having milk and cheese and had another significant shift. That was seven months into the diet. I must have had insulin resistance and a bad reaction to dairy because my energy improved and suddenly I dropped two dress sizes. A nice bonus.

6) What negatives have you found with the Carnivore Diet?

It can be socially awkward, but I think the biggest change is how I relate to the world. Seeing that not all TRUTHS, like ‘veg is healthy’ are real. I look behind the facades. I think my non-standard views are the greater social change. On the other hand, I am learning to communicate in a completely new way. So really it’s just another gift 🙂

7) Do you exercise on the Carnivore Diet, if so how do you find it and what do you do.

I used to run for fitness and anxiety, now I can’t be bothered with it.

I like to swim and would like to lift weights. However, currently, this is on hold, as I get histamine intolerance triggered by doing workouts. I am pretty certain I can overcome this health issue too.

I go for walks every day.

8) What piece of advice would you give someone who is interested in trying this diet, but hasn’t taken the leap yet?

Join the carnivore community, having a peer group will improve your success rate. There are many helpful Facebook groups, like ‘Zeroing in on health’ and individuals on Instagram. I have recently qualified as a coach on MeatRX (great portal for info on the carnivore diet) where you can pick up inexpensive 30 min coaching sessions for 1:1 help.

9) Do you think Carnivore will ever be accepted as a mainstream diet?

That is the big question. When carnivores show off their health, joy, energy and confidence from this way of eating people pay attention. I started talking about it openly in September and I can see a lot of curiosity for this diet. People get into trouble with their health and actively looking for answers. Thank goodness for the internet. Some doctors started paying attention too and I am thankful for the likes of Dr Chris Palmer, (in the field of Bipolar and Schizophrenia at Harvard Clinics) recommending a ketogenic approach for mental health.
