Interview with Jon
1) Introduce Yourself.
My name is Jon Rhinehart. I am a dad, dog lover, mountain biker and husband. I like to go hiking with my dogs, spending time with my family and mountain biking with my friends. I also like to study nutrition and I listen to podcasts while I am out adventuring. I live in Arizona so the outdoors activities here are amazing.
2) How did you eat before Carnivore.
Before the carnivore diet, I did Keto for two years. Before that, I was Standard American diet. My Keto was a whole-food, clean Keto. I followed Doctor Berg for most of my diet advice. I did lose all my weight doing that. I went from 285-195. But I had terrible digestion. I never had that on the SAD diet. I was eating these huge salads every day, a small amount of fatty meat followed by a handful of nuts and a couple squares of dark chocolate. I tried kimchi and types of probiotics and none of that helped. Looking back on it now I realised I was eating way more fiber and anti nutrients than my body could handle.
3) Why did you try Carnivore to begin with.
I started the Carnivore Diet because of my bad digestion on Keto. I also was listening to Shawn Baker, and Amber O’hearn. I wanted to see if the carnivore diet would help me lose the last 15-20 lbs that I felt that I had to loose. I knew about it from all my Keto podcast. I was on the fence with it for about a year before I dove in and tried it. Of course I was like everyone else and said I will try it for 30 days. That turned into 90, then 365 and now I have no intention of changing.
4) How do you personally approach the Carnivore Diet.
My Carnivore diet started with coffee, meat, spices, and dairy . I did that for for several months. I had skin itchiness that didn’t go away on Keto it also didn’t go away when I first started Carnivore. I then decided to go deeper. I cut out everything except meat, salt and water. As soon as I did that the itchiness went away. I later found out that it was Dairy all along. Since then I have added back eggs, spices, and coffee. A typical day of eating for me is about 2-3 lbs of red meat. I eat a few eggs sprinkled in 3-4 cups of black coffee a day.
5) What benefits have you seen since starting the Carnivore Diet.
Since starting the Carnivore diet. My weight has stayed the same but I have lost 4 inches off my waist. I can climb higher and go further on my mountain bike. I never get sick, I have boundless energy all the time. My seasonal allergies are gone. I still had some food cravings on Keto. On Carnivore its amazing. I don’t have thoughts of food like I did on Keto. My digestion is absolutely flawless now. I feel almost weightless . I feel like I am eating now to fuel my body. I find it incredibly freeing.
6) What negatives have you found with the Carnivore Diet.
The only negative I would say about the diet is that it is not very socially acceptable. I don’t fit into this low fat world. I can’t really go out to eat without it costing a lot of money.
7) Do you exercise on the Carnivore Diet, if so how do you find it and what do you do.
I do exercise, I like to paddleboard, hike, mountain bike, I find that for my age I am incredibly fit. I never run out of endurance and I can do it all on an empty stomach.
8) What piece of advice would you give someone who is interested in trying this diet, but hasn’t taken the leap yet.
My advice for anyone who wants to try this diet is to try it. But have the honesty and intelligence to interpret the results. Be sure that you give it a fair shot. You might have to go 90 days meat, salt, and water only to see if it truly works.
9) Do you think Carnivore will ever be accepted as a mainstream diet.
I have read Good Calories Bad Calories a dozen times. The first few times I read to book I was hyper-focused on the energy balance weight loss aspect of that book that the mainstream science screwed up so badly. But after going Carnivore and rereading that book a few more times. I picked up on the main part of that book which I believe now to be the disappearance of animal foods from our diet caused by an anti-meat agenda, religious ideology, and financial interest. The consequence of that is the science has been completely wrong for the last 120 year. I really hope that this carnivore moment will be excepted. That is why I choose to share my story and write this testimonial.
10) Anything you would like to add, and where can people follow you.
I was an alcoholic, overweight, had high blood pressure, terrible anxiety and constantly agitated and angry. I was not a nice person. Keto helped me 85% of the way to the person I am today. I believe Keto works so well because its closer to carnivore than the SAD diet. You end cutting out lots of the processed foods like sugar, refined carbs and seed oils. I feel that many end up eating far more veggies than they used to when they go on Keto and those are actually not that healthy and cause many people issues. I consider them now starvation food and a complete waste of time. I feel like I have finally figured out how to make all the pieces of health and nutrition fit together. All signs point to Carnivore.
