Interview with Laura
Introduce Yourself.
My name is Laura Spath, I am 34 year old working Mom. I lost 120 pounds in 10 months on a Carnivore diet (the first couple months were keto). I have been maintaining that weight loss for the last 6 months. My husband is also carnivore (look for his story too coming up) and our kids (5 and 3) eat a clean, whole foods diet. We focus on feeding them high protein meals and keeping grains, sugars, and seed oils out of their diet.
How did you eat before Carnivore.
My diet before carnivore consisted of fast food restaurants and gas stations. We cooked at home, but it was meat and potatoes, rice, pastas. I went through periods of “diets” with salads and chicken breast and then would cave and treat myself to a pint of ice cream. I had tried to be healthy but always ended up cheating because of a celebration, or holiday, or stressful situation.
Why did you try Carnivore to begin with.
I had been on a ketogenic diet and I stalled on my weight loss. I began to get stricter with my carbs, cutting processed foods, and incorporated fasting. I began to dive deep into the world of Carnivore research, watching YouTube videos, and listening to podcasts. I read about plant toxins and the benefits of a high protein all meat diet. I appreciated the concept that I could eat more nutrient dense foods, feel satisfied and who doesn’t want to eat steak every day!! I had still been struggling with cravings previously and being consistent. Transitioning to a Carnivore diet has helped me to eliminate the cheat meals and have long term consistency!
How do you personally approach the Carnivore Diet.
I personally eat once a day and stick to mostly beef only. An ideal day for me is 2 pounds of grilled Ribeye eaten at noon, and then nothing else the rest of the day. I have tried to add variety but that tends to give me some additional stress or just makes me regret not having a steak. I feel the most satisfied and have the fewest cravings when I eat nothing but steak once a day.
What benefits have you seen since starting the Carnivore Diet.
Weight loss is the most obvious benefit, but also improvements in anxiety, stress, and digestion. I have had my skin clear up and my hair is growing in stronger and healthier.
What negatives have you found with the Carnivore Diet.
You have to be consistent to find the true benefits of this way of eating. The longer you stick to it the better you will feel. If you are having cheat meals on the weekends or at every special occasion, then you will inevitably end up less healthy than when you started. For this to work you need to be truly committed. Your body needs to be in a fat adapted state to see the benefits of eating fatty meats often and “occasional cheats” will eliminate those benefits.
Do you exercise on the Carnivore Diet, if so how do you find it and what do you do.
I had lost 80 pounds first before I went to the gym. At that point I had enough energy to think about working out and I was looking to start toning after the large weight loss. I currently take a weight lifting class at my gym 2x a week. I say first get the diet in line and worry about the exercise second.
What piece of advice would you give someone who is interested in trying this diet, but hasn’t taken the leap yet.
Give it 30 days of very strict just meat (beef) and water. Carnivore is great for healing and to see how foods truly affect you. At that point you can play around with other meats and animal foods and find what works for you long term.
Do you think Carnivore will ever be accepted as a mainstream diet.
I can’t see the beef only diet being a part of the nutrition guidelines. My hope for my children is that a high protein diet with no sugars, grains, or seed oils is what will be taught in schools.
