BookBeat – My Introduction

BookBeat have kindly provided me with a subscription, in return for honest reviews and stories about how BookBeat can be helpful to my lifestyle.

bb b 1

Who are BookBeat

BookBeat is a digital streaming service. Providing 1000’s of Audiobooks for your listening pleasure. It was founded in Sweden in 2015, then opened in Finland, and recently here in the UK.

Cost

£14.90 a month, with no commitment. The contract rolls on month by month, you can cancel at anytime. For this price, you can listen to as many audiobooks as you want. They are currently offering a 2 weeks free trial, however here on Ketogenic Endurance you can get an excellent deal of a months free trial. Just use this link – https://www.bookbeat.com/uk/blogteam

Audiobooks

I presume most people know what audiobooks are, but if not then I will tell you. Basically a nice man or women sits down in front of a microphone and reads an entire book, and in relation to this service; you can download or stream the book, and listen to someone read it to you.

bb b 5

The BookBeat service

They offer a wide range of audiobooks, and like I have mentioned. Depending on your listening preferences you can download an audiobook to your phone for example, and can listen to it offline. Or you can stream it over WIFI or 4G for instance. Handily in these modern times, they put no restrictions on your usage whilst traveling abroad. So you can download audiobooks in England and listen to it in France for example, you can even stream abroad too.

My Experience with BookBeat

I actually created an account on their website, but you can do this on your phone easily too. The registration process was really straight forward and took barely a couple of minutes. Once that is done you are good to go. I then downloaded the iPhone app, and logged in. The app is really easy to use. It looks great too, simple, clean but with a splash of colour and fun. The Home page is where your audiobooks are stored. The other pages offer different ways of finding new audiobooks. Once you have found one found it is really easy to either listen too or download.

The first book I choose was “The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo” by Amy Schumer. I decided to download it, as that option better suits me. The audiobook downloaded quickly and I was listening to it almost immediately. The sound quality is good, as expected by any good streaming site.

The only issue I have had is mainly my own stupidity. When I come out of an App I always double click and shut the app down properly. Now if you do this whilst the audiobook is playing, it will not save where you were. However I quickly realised if you press pause first, then do the full app shutdown it will save your spot. I must admit I have forgotten to do this a couple of times!!!

bb b 6

How I envision using BookBeat

Firstly I have a 40 minute commute to work, and the same back. So I am a regular user of audiobooks. When I am actually reading paper books, I like horror, action and sci-fi books. However for some reason for work commutes I tend to prefer autobiographies and history books.

I am also currently training for a Marathon in October 2017, then I plan on doing ultramarathons. So that’s going to be a lot of running hours logged on roads and trails. I mainly train on my own, so as my runs get longer I am going to need a bit of company. So audiobooks will be a very useful tool for me moving forward.

As well as that I do a lot of walking, hiking and camping. So I am sure I will find other situations to use BookBeat.

A Simple Keto Recipe – Chicken Hotpot

used chp 2

Really easy to make. A lot of the flavour comes from the smoked cheese, so don’t skimp on it. I used Chicken Heck Sausages for ease. However you could easily use normal diced chicken.

Ingredients – Serves 2

340g Chicken Heck Sausages – £3 at the time of purchase.

40g Chorizo – £0.50

125g Smoked Cheese – £1.25

Half a Small Red Cabbage – £0.40

100g Sliced Greens – £0.40

1 Medium Onion – £0.20

4 cloves of Garlic – £0.20

2 tablespoons of Butter – £0.20

used chp 5

Instructions – Cooking Time – 25 minutes

In a large pan. Melt the butter, chop the sausages into cubes. Cook on a medium heat for 10 minutes.

Then chop the onion and garlic, add to the pan and cook for a further 5 minutes. Chop the red cabbage and add to the pan with the sliced greens. Cook for another 5 minutes.

Slice up the cheese and chorizo. Stir through, and cook for another 5 minutes.

Per portion; you are looking at around 720 Calories, Total Carbs 13g (8%), Protein 58g (32%) and Fat 48g (60%). These figures are taken from MyFitnessPal, so you could argue the figures up and down a bit but you get my point. Per portion you are looking at a cost of around £3.10.

Simple Keto Recipe- Strawberry Mousse

used sm 1

This is a really quick easy dessert, which I really enjoy. However there is a note of caution. I am not a big fan of natural sweeteners, so this recipe does not include them. I have been low carb for over a year, so the Strawberries and Lemon juice made it sweet enough for me. However my wife who does not do Keto, said it needed some extra sweetness. So I would recommend that if you are in the early stages of Keto, then maybe add some Stevia or equivalent. If you are fully fat-adapted you should be fine.

used sm 2

Ingredients – Serves 2

200g Cream Cheese – £1 at the time of writing.

100ml Whipping Cream – £1

6 Strawberries – £2

Juice from half a Lemon – £0.60

2 teaspoons of Chai seeds – £0.20

2 Cubes of 90% Dark Chocolate – £0.30

used sm 3

Instructions – Prep Time: 10 minutes.

Take all the ingredients and throw them into a blender, and blitz…. ermm that’s about it really haha. Just spoon the mixture into a bowl or glass.

Per portion; you are looking at around 647 Calories, Total Carbs 12g (10%), Protein 7g (6%) and Fat 44g (84%). These figures are taken from MyFitnessPal, so you could argue the figures up and down a bit but you get my point. Per portion you are looking at a cost of around £2.55.

I am in a Keto Maintenance mode at the moment, so I am not worried about losing weight. So a 647 calorie dessert does not worry me. If you are counting calories, then I would recommend omitting the Chai Seeds and Dark Chocolate. This will make it easier to fit the dessert into a calorie controller ketogenic diet.

IAMRUNBOX Backpack Pro Review

IAMRUNBOX have kindly supplied me with a Backpack Pro, to provide an honest review. Even though I am an ambassador for them, they have had no input in the review.

used 2 1

Who are IAMRUNBOX?

Founded in 2014, with the aim of producing products to make exercise easier whilst commuting and travelling. Their garment carriers and backpacks are designed to carry work clothes, and keep them wrinkle free whilst you are running or cycling to and from work. The main problem I have here is that my work shirt will probably not be going into my backpack wrinkle free, as my ironing skills are pretty limited. IAMRUNBOX can’t be blamed for that though.

used 2 2

What is Run Commuting?

It is ditching your car, abandoning the train or bus. It is sticking on your running shoes, or jumping on your bike to and/or from work. There is no getting stuck in traffic, no waiting for the tube, no paying for parking. Sounds good doesn’t it?

Run commuting definitely seems to be on the rise, and I think running in general is in a good place at the moment. I am looking to do a mixture of 10k’s, half and full marathons this year and participation seems high.

Yet it is easy to let work and life get in the way. So I believe run commuting could be a good option for people to at least try. Then if you like it, IAMRUNBOX can certainly help you out.

used 2 3

What does Run Commuting mean to me?

I live 22 miles from work. So that’s a little far to run to work and back, well it’s a lot too far actually. However I do believe in the benefits of exercise before work. Dragging your butt out of bed can be an issue, but once you are up and you do some form of exercise. I believe you always feel better for it, and it sets you up for the day. As well as improving your state of mind.

So I have used the backpack in a few different ways, than maybe the backpack was purely designed for.

Mainly I pack my work clothes into the backpack, but drive to a place to run on the way to work. Do my run and drive the rest of the way to work. Then change. Or I will pack the backpack with my running gear, so that I can go for a run on the way home. I have also used it as a mini suitcase, and as a backpack for food and water when I have been walking and hiking.

used 2 4

What is the Backpack Pro?

It is a sturdy backpack, designed to keep you clothes wrinkle free when run or cycle commuting.

Specs: Height 380mm, Width 265mm, Depth 105mm, weight 945g, volume 10 litres.

There is an inner zipped compartment for clothing and shoes, and an inner laptop carrying capability. There is an elastic cord system included, that allows you to attach a coat. Or an additional show bag, which you have to buy separately

It is fully water resistant, and has pockets for wallets and phones etc. There is a lot more I could say regarding the material and so forth, but their website can tell you that better than me. The link is – https://iamrunbox.com/en/backpack/4-backpack-pro.html#/color-orange

used 2 5

Style

I love how it looks. I think it has a very simple design, but with a splash of colour. It looks different, and is something you would notice people wearing. This is nice because you would have a fair idea they are run commuters, so you could strike up a conversation with them. Also if you are walking into a professional office with one on, you are not going to look silly. People may just think it is a new laptop holder, or bag.

used 2 6

Quality

To me the product looks well-made and durable. Sometimes products looks good in pictures, but when you get them in your hands you can find they are not as good as they look. This product feels well-crafted and sturdy, and looks like it has been made from high quality materials.

used 2 7

Fit and Comfort

It is a one size fits all backpack, where you adjust the straps to get your perfect fit. This was really straight forward. Everything clicked in easily, and the straps are easy to adjust. Once I adjusted mine, there was quite a bit of spare straps flapping about. However there are means to tuck these away.

I have never worn a hard cased backpack before; actually I have never really seen one before either. However it works. It sits on your back really nicely. Your barely know it’s there really. There are 4 foam pods on the back, which make the contact with your back. These really do work, even though they look really small and you wouldn’t think they would help much.

used 2 8

Packing Space

You can easily fit your work clothes and shoes in. Space becomes a little tight, when you put a laptop in. Also it leaves little room for lunch food. You would like to think that most people who would buy this would be eating healthily, so may like to take their own lunch to work. I haven’t got the shoe bag. However that may  help solve the problem, by using the shoe bag you would create space in the backpack. You could maybe use the shoe bag as a lunch box too? I have also used it as a mini suitcase, for a day trip. It would be ideal for carry on luggage too, for a little weekend away.

used 2 9

Conclusion

Great product, well made, and innovative. I really believe IAMRUNBOX are a superb up and coming company, with some bright ideas. I wouldn’t have become an ambassador, if I didn’t think that.

Some may feel the price is prohibitive, but that is something for you to weigh up. If you are happy to pay the price, I am sure you will be happy with the product. There are a few different options at different prices, which would suit slightly different commuting needs.

Simple Keto Recipe – Chicken Stew

_hrp4413

A hearty simple stew. Stew’s work best with hard vegetables, like carrots and turnips. However these are also on the higher end of the carb scale. I am ok with this, if I make a stew I make it with vegetables that go well in the stew. I am in a maintenance mode with Keto at the minute, meaning I am not looking to lose a lot of weight. I am also training for a marathon, so I don’t feel the need to be super strict. However if you are just starting out on your keto journey, or if you are still targeting significant weight loss. Then I would recommend making the stew without any vegetables, then have vegatables that fit your macros as a side dish perhaps.

Ingredients – Serves 6

6 Chicken thighs with skin on – at time of purchase £2

12 Slices of bacon, cheap fatty bacon is fine – £2

1 Onion – £0.20

1 Turnip – £0.50

3 Carrots – £0.30

1 Chilli Pepper – £0.30

4 Cloves of Garlic – £0.20

1 Tablespoon of Butter – £0.20

1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil – £0.20

1 Tablespoon of Coconutflour – £0.20

Chicken Stock – enough to cover the meat – £0.50

100ml Coconut Milk – £0.80

used-4

Instructions – Prep Time: 10 minutes. Cooking Time:2 hours.

In a large pan, that has a lid. Melt the butter and coconut oil. Brown the chicken thighs, chop up the bacon and brown that a bit too. Add chopped garlic, chilli, and coconut flour. Stir through and cook for a couple of minutes. Add enough chicken stock to cover everything, and bring to the boil. Put on the lid. Turn to a simmer, and cook for an hour.

Remove the thighs. Remove the meat and skin from the bones. Chop the meat and skin into smaller pieces and add back to the pan. Chop up the vegetables, add to the pan. Add more stock to cover everything if needed, put on the lid. Cook for another hour. If you think there is too much stock, leave the lid off for a bit. With 15 minutes to go stir in some Coconut milk, and continue to simmer.

Per portion; you are looking at around 447 Calories, Total Carbs 16g (13%), Protein 27g (22%) and Fat 35g (65%). These figures are taken from MyFitnessPal, so you could argue the figures up and down a bit but you get my point. Per portion you are looking at a cost of around £1.25.

Skins DNAmic Thermal Men’s Compression Long Tights Review

Skins kindly provided me with a pair of these tights, to provide an honest review.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Who is Skins

Skins is a compression focused sports clothing company. They believe their compression gear helps boost training, performance, and speed recovery. Below is some of their research, showing the benefits of compression clothing. https://www.skins.net/uk/compression-technology/

I originally found them on Instagram. I noticed how different their gear looks. It looks stylish, and bold. I then checked out their Facebook and Twitter accounts, which all look great. I also like how they have different accounts for different countries. So I have followed all the Skins GB accounts.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

About the DNAmic Thermal Compression Tights

They are thermal tights designed with Dynamic Gradient Compression to aid your winter sports performance. The compression is said to increase oxygenation to the muscles, support the muscles, and reduces build up of blood lactate. The thermal fabric is designed to keep heat in the body, whilst managing moisture.

I was invited to choose any pair of tights from their website. I chose the thermal tights because primarily I needed some tights for running, and I live in the North-East of England. So its can be a bit cold outside at this time of year.

https://www.skins.net/uk/dnamic-thermal-mens-long-tights.html

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Size Guide

As I had to choose from a website, you have the same issues you would any time you shop online. However the size guide on the website is excellent, one of the best I have seen. It is set out like a chart. You go up the side of the chart to find you height, then along until you get to your weight. It recommended Medium, which is what I would have ordered anyway.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Arrival

The tights arrived promptly in nice packaging. As soon as you handled the product, you could tell they were quality tights. They just felt like they are made of good materials and had a nice weight to them.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Style

They looked good on the website, and they look awesome in real life. I think they look really cool, different, and stand out from the crowd. I tested them in a 10k race at the weekend. At the event I saw a few more people wearing different types of Skins tights, and they all looked great.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Fit

Putting them on is a little hard but in a good way. It reminds me of having to pull on a light wetsuit. You have to step into them, and pull them up with a bit of shimmying. This to me is a sign of the quality of the material and high level of compression.

I have quite skinny legs below the knee, with small calves and a big gap between the bottom of my calf and my ankles. I have some “summer” compression tights from another well known company. Whilst I like the tights, and they fit great above the knee. They are a little loose below the knee. So much so, I actually ware compression calf sleeves under the tights. When I put the skins on, the first thing I noticed was that they were tight fitting all over. Which impressed me a lot.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Test

I have worn them on a few training runs, and they preformed really well. The best test I have put them through was last weekend. I ran a 10k at Bamburgh. It’s classed as trail run, but it is about 70% running on Northumberland’s beaches. It was wild too, reported 40mph gusts. The registration was 1 hour before the bus trip to the start. So there was a lot of waiting about outside. I had my race gear on, with an additional hoodie. The tights definitely kept my lower body warm, which was impressive. Yet when I started running, I didn’t feel too warm. They seem to keep your legs a constant comfortable temperature. Well played Skins.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Conclusion.

Like I have said I have a pair of compression calf sleeves, and warm weather compression tights. Both by leading well respected brands. I can honestly say that I found these Skins tights to be a step up from them. I am very impressed.
