Endurancelife: Coastal Trail Series 2017 Northumberland 10K

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Race Time – 01:04:47. The race was actually 6.7 miles. So Strava put my 10k (6.2 miles) distance at 00:58:41.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Breakfast – I had two strips of pork belly, with a sliced sweet potato that I then fried in butter. Washed down with 500ml of water.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Parking – It was a 1h45m drive. We arrived into Bamburgh on time. The parking was well sign posted. The 10k was the last race to register so all the other racers would have been parked already. Yet the parking was easy and ample.

Registration – Our time slot was between 9:45 – 10:30am, inside the castle grounds. The registration point was well sign posted and there was plenty of staff about to point you in the right direction. They wrote your number on your hand, attached a timing chip to your wrist, and gave you your number to safety pin to yourself. The only downside here was that the queue for the registration overlapped with the toilets, which meant a bit of congestion.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Meeting – The meeting was at 11am. So there was a bit of waiting about beforehand, and there wasn’t much to do. The meeting was light hearted and informative.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Getting to the Start – After the meeting there was a  bit of time for a loo break. Then you were shown to the buses. They drove you to the start in Beadnal. There were toilets at the car park too. They walked you from the car park, to the beach, then about 500m down the beach to the start. Everything went smoothly.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Race – Wow what a beautiful place to run. I would say for a least 6 miles of the 6.7 miles, you could see the sea or were right next to it. You started off in the soft sand, but everyone soon ran down to the hard sand next to the water. Then you came off the beach and ran through Beadnal, back onto the beach, and then through Seahouses. The next bit of the run was probably the most boring part, a single track path which also had the general public on. However you were soon back onto the beach, and what an amazing beach it is. I am guessing the last 2-2.5miles was on the beach, with Bamburgh castle in the foreground. It was really tough but stunning. The hardest bit of the race was right at the end, you have to come off beach and head through the dunes to the castle. Which is all up hill, and an absolute killer. I would guess 70% of the run was on beaches, and there were a few tricky parts where you were on rocks. I gave my toe a right whacking, I have a lovely bruise on my toe as a souvenir!!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Conclusion – A great little event. If its on next year, I think I will do the Half or Full Marathon. I was happy with my performance. My average pace was 9:32 minutes per mile. I was close to this pace throughout, and felt comfortable at it. I could have easily done a couple of extra miles. However anytime I tried to increase the pace past this I struggled, and had to come back down to the pace I was comfortable with.

N.B – I wore my Skins Compression Tights for the first time. They were great. I will do a full review of them in due course.

Simple Keto Recipe – Pancakes

pd1

Pancake Day or Shove Tuesday is just around the corner. So I made up a batch of Keto Pancakes today, just to make sure they tasted nice…. and they do. So I will be doing exactly the same this coming Tuesday. Obviously my childhood favourites of lemon and sugar are out, but there are plenty of keto alternatives you can experiment with.

pd2

Ingredients – 12 Pancakes

200g Cream Cheese – £1 cost at time of writing.

8 medium Eggs – £1.80

120g Coconut Flour – £1

20g Baking Powder – £0.50

pd3

Instructions – Prep Time: 5 minutes. Cooking Time:2 minutes per pancake.

Put the cream cheese in a blender and crack the eggs in too. Blitz it. Add the coconut flour and baking powder. Blitz it again. Done. Pretty simple eh? Cook the pancakes as you would normal ones.

Per pancake; you are looking at around 150 Calories, Total Carbs 4g (9%), Protein 6g (13%) and Fat 13g (78%). These figures are taken from MyFitnessPal, so you could argue the figures up and down a bit but you get my point. Per pancake cost is around £0.35.

I made savoury ones. For these I grated some cheddar cheese, and chopped up some ham.

The sweet ones were 150g of double cream, and 75g raspberries. Blended them into a sauce.

IAMRUNBOX ambassador

In the good ole days, it was a good idea to be a decent runner. As you had to be able to hunt your own prey and avoid Sabre-toothed Tigers. Or at the very least you probably had a long run to the nearest safe watering hole. An actual watering hole I mean, not a pub.

We have different stresses nowadays. The 9-5 grind, meetings, deadlines, and the dreaded commute to get there. So it is not always easy to fit exercise in, and I am not a fan of the treadmill. I like to do my running outside.

Enter IAMRUNBOX. Founded in 2014, with the aim of producing products to make exercise easier whilst commuting and travelling. Their garment carriers and backpacks are designed to carry work clothes, and keep them wrinkle free whilst you are running or cycling to and from work. The main problem I have here is that my work shirt will probably not be going into my backpack wrinkle free, as my ironing skills are pretty limited. IAMRUNBOX can’t be blamed for that though.

Run commuting definitely seems to be on the rise, and I think running in general is in a good place at the moment. I am looking to do a mixture of 10k’s, half and full marathons this year and participation seems high.

Yet it is easy to let work and life get in the way. So I believe run commuting could be a good option for people to at least try. Then if you like it, IAMRUNBOX can certainly help you out. I am really pleased to be an ambassador for them, and I am currently putting the Backpack Pro through its paces. I am also going to test it out in environments it probably wasn’t designed for, to see how it copes. For example I will take it hiking and camping.

I will do a full review of the Backpack Pro in a few weeks, to see how it has done.

New Strava Running Club

A Runner must run with dreams in his heart – Emil Zatopek

bkhd28921

There is a new Strava Club on the block, ready to take over the world!! The head of Ketogenic Endurance (shh… that’s me), voted it the best up and coming club on Strava…. Guess what it is called….. drum roll….. oh yer….. its just…… Ketogenic Endurance.

bzcg07171

So get on Strava, go to the Club section and search Ketogenic Endurance.

It is open to anyone, of any ability, who is interested in running on LCHF and/or Ketogenic Diet.

It is a safe place where people can see how people train on low carb food, and how it is a legitimate way to fuel your body whilst exercising. I also promise that if anyone puts a picture up of themselves eating a Bagel after a run, I will throw them out of the group….. You think I am joking don’t you J

Vibram FiveFingers Spyridon MR Elite Review

wjls98551

Rating: 90%

Summary

  • Designed for Trails and Mud.
  • Strong Brand in the Barefoot / Minimalist market.

http://eu.vibram.com/en/shop/fivefingers/men/spyridon-mr-elite/M54.html?dwvar_M54_color=Black%20%2F%20Yellow#start=1

  • Specs: See link above
  • Cost: Mid-High £105. I bought mine from an official UK stockist. The price on the official Vibram site is €145. You seem to be able to get them cheaper off Amazon, but I am fairly positive some of these will be fakes.
  • Look: I think they look awesome, Black and Neon Yellow is a strong look. Just looking at them, they look durable and well made.
  • Comfort: Very comfortable. I have worn them with 5 finger socks and without any socks, for distances between 3 and 10 miles. No discomfort at all. They are easy to get on and off, and they fit snugly and your feet do not slip around in them.
  • Durability: They seem well made. I have ran about 70 miles in them, and there is no noticeable wear on them including the sole. Although I have read that the sole is thicker and softer than most fivefingers, as they are designed for mud. So they do wear a little quicker than other products in the Vibram range.

kmtu54281

I currently use Freet Meta Ayr for road running; however I have started doing much more trail running recently. So I needed a barefoot style trail shoe. I wanted a pair of Vibram Fivefingers, and the Spyridon were the ones I went for. I have ran in them in the snow, frost, ice and mud. In all the conditions, I have felt safe. I run on trails around my home town, so I do have to spend a bit of time on roads, to get from one trail or public footpath to another. They still feel good on the roads, but I presume the tread will burn out more quickly.

earm38441

I would recommend these to any minimalist / barefoot trail runner, and I would buy them again when the time comes.

Ketogenic Diet: Simply Keto – Crustless Pepperoni Pizzetta

img_15951

Ingredients – Serves 4

200g Extra Mature Chedder Cheese – possible cost of £1.25 (GBP) at the time of writing.

40g Pepperoni – £0.30

Instructions – Prep Time: 5 minutes. Cooking Time: 10-15 minutes

Grate the cheese, and chop the pepperoni into smaller bits. I grate my own cheese, as pre grated cheese in the UK has added potato starch. Presumably to stop the cheese from sticking together.

I used a none-stick frying pan, on medium to high heat. Sprinkle the cheese into the pan with the pepperoni. Keep an eye on it, when it has formed a hard crust on the bottom, turn it over and give it a couple more minutes. Cut into quarters, and you are done.

The snack per serving; you are looking at around 250 Calories, Total Carbs 1g (1%), Protein 14g (23%) and Fat 20g (76%). These figures are taken from MyFitnessPal, so you could argue the figures up and down a bit but you get my point. The snack per person/portion is around £0.40.

This was my first attempt. I was originally looking for work lunch ideas, as I am getting a bit bored with egg or meat salads. I don’t think this recipe would work as a lunch meal in its current version. I envision it as a snack, for when I am out walking or at the cinema. However I will do some experimenting. Maybe add some chopped cherry tomatoes to give it more of a pizza feel, as well as different vegetables like spinach and mushrooms. Then I might get to a version I would be happy with for a lunch option.
