Someone at work commented on my weight loss this week. Yer its down to the Ketogenic Diet I say. Oh what’s that they say. Its low carb high fat I say. They look at me with confusion and then after a little processing with disgust before walking off.
Now if I said Slimming World or Weight Watchers, I am sure I would have got into a 5 minute conversation, about how we both lost weight, then put it back on, but are both going to try it again to lose some weight before Christmas because it worked before, then putting the weight back on over Christmas, before having a January meltdown and blaming age for the weight gain!!!
For the few people who end up asking questions, they quickly come to the conclusion that it is not sustainable and I will give up on it soon enough. They are kind of right, but not in the way they are thinking. They presume it is impossible to give up pizza, toast and cake. When that isn’t the problem at all. You are consuming dietary fat, so you don’t crave pizza. Bread starts to make you feel like crap, and you are fat adapted so your body isn’t telling you to eat that piece of cake just in case you can’t eat for another couple of hours.
The problem is planning. The real world doesn’t want you to eat Keto. If you are out for the day and have not taken food, you are in for a bit of stress trying to find some food that isn’t processed junk. Now please note, it can be hard but it isn’t impossible. Plus there is also the Keto option of going f*** it, I will eat nothing and pretend it is some sort of scientific fast I am doing.
So you need to plan but not in a way that takes over your life. I spend a lot of time out for an entire day. It could be a day up the Lake District. Or there are days where I will go up to Newcastle to watch the match, and then go to the cinema. So I am out for over 12 hours.
Credit goes to the wife on this one. We have recently just bought some cheap food flasks. http://www.wilko.com/flasks+travel-cups/food-flask-450ml/invt/0400478 and they are great. It’s ok just having some cold meats, olives and cheese in the summer. However in the winter you need a little something more. So we have started filling our food flasks with yummy Keto or PHD (Perfect Health Diet – which Heather follows) food. It can be anything really, stews, soups, chilli etc.
Like I say Keto can be difficult, but not because you are craving bad food. It is hard because either people demand crap food or because food companies supply crap food….. and over time we have just put up with it. So Keto is hard because you have to go out of your way to make sure you have access to real healthy unprocessed food. So you need to find ways to make your life easier, and food flasks have certainly improved my life and my ability to stick to a Ketogenic Lifestyle.
